
Wood Stork (Mycteria americana)
With its bald, scaly head, enormous curved bill, long legs, and broad black-and-white wings, the Wood Stork looks like a bird that wandered out of another era. Yet this unusual wading bird is perfectly adapted for life in shallow wetlands.
Wood Storks are the only true storks that regularly breed in the United States. They are also remarkable hunters. Instead of relying primarily on eyesight, they often find prey by touch, sweeping an open bill through shallow water until something triggers one of the fastest feeding reflexes found among vertebrates.
For birdwatchers along the Texas Gulf Coast, Wood Storks are especially exciting summer visitors. They no longer regularly nest in Texas, but post-breeding birds travel north from Mexico and may appear in marshes, ponds, flooded fields, and other shallow wetlands during the warmer months.

How to Identify a Wood Stork
An adult Wood Stork is difficult to mistake once you get a good look at one.
The body is mostly white, while the large flight feathers and short tail are black. Those dark feathers can show an attractive greenish or purplish sheen in good light.
Perhaps its most memorable feature is the head. Adults have a dark gray, featherless head and upper neck with rough, scaly-looking skin. The bill is long, thick, dark, and curves slightly downward.
Their long gray legs give them the classic silhouette of a large wading bird.
Juveniles look considerably less prehistoric. Young Wood Storks have more feathering on the head and neck and typically have a yellowish bill. As they mature, the feathers on the head disappear and the bill darkens.
Identifying a Wood Stork in Flight
Flight is one of the easiest times to identify this species.
Look for:
- Broad white wings with extensive black flight feathers
- A long neck held straight out
- Long legs extending well beyond the tail
- Slow, powerful wingbeats
- Long periods of soaring
Wood Storks are excellent gliders and frequently ride rising columns of warm air much like vultures and hawks.
The combination of black-and-white wings, an extended neck, and trailing legs is an excellent field mark.

What Do Wood Storks Eat?
Fish make up much of the Wood Stork’s diet, although they also consume aquatic invertebrates and may occasionally take amphibians, reptiles, and other small prey.
What makes them truly interesting is how they hunt.
A Wood Stork walks slowly through shallow water with its bill partly open and submerged. Rather than waiting until it sees a fish, the bird feels for prey.
The instant a fish or other animal touches the bill, it snaps shut.
And it is fast.
The Wood Stork’s bill can close in approximately 25 milliseconds after contact with prey.
That is especially useful in the muddy or cloudy water where visual hunting would be difficult.
Wood Storks may also shuffle their feet through the bottom or flick their wings to disturb hiding fish and other animals. Once something moves into range—SNAP.
Lunch.
Habitat
Wood Storks depend heavily on wetlands.
They forage in:
- Freshwater marshes
- Brackish wetlands
- Shallow ponds
- Swamps
- Flooded fields
- Wetland impoundments
- Shallow edges of lakes and waterways
Foraging water is usually quite shallow. Wetlands around 4–12 inches deep can provide excellent feeding habitat, especially when falling water levels concentrate fish into smaller pools.
That relationship between water level and prey concentration is extremely important.
A wetland containing plenty of fish isn’t necessarily useful to a Wood Stork if the water is too deep for efficient feeding. As wetlands slowly dry, fish become concentrated in shallow pools where storks can catch them much more easily.
In other words, Wood Storks do not simply need wetlands.
They need functioning wetlands with natural—or carefully managed—cycles of flooding and drying.
Wood Storks in Texas
Texas gives us a slightly different Wood Stork story than Florida and the southeastern Atlantic Coast.
Wood Storks were once known to nest along the Upper Texas Coast, including historical colonies in Chambers, Harris, and Jefferson counties. Regular nesting disappeared from Texas decades ago, with the last reported breeding records dating to around 1960.
Today, most Wood Storks seen in eastern Texas are visitors.
After breeding, birds from populations in Mexico disperse northward in search of productive feeding areas. Along the Texas coast, they may begin appearing as early as May and can remain into October. They are considered uncommon to locally common summer visitors along the coast and into the eastern portion of the state.
Late summer can therefore be an excellent time to look for them.
Shallow ponds that are beginning to dry, marshes, flooded agricultural areas, wildlife refuges, and managed wetland impoundments can attract feeding groups.
And don’t forget to look up.
A Wood Stork soaring high overhead can easily go unnoticed if you’re concentrating on birds at water level.
Behavior
Despite their somewhat imposing appearance, Wood Storks are highly social birds.
They often feed together, sometimes moving through shallow water in loose lines. One bird disturbing fish can make feeding easier for the birds following behind.
They also nest communally in large colonies, frequently sharing nesting areas with herons, egrets, ibises, and other colonial waterbirds.
When temperatures warm and rising air creates thermals, Wood Storks often leave the wetlands and begin soaring. Their broad wings allow them to travel efficiently with relatively little flapping.
Wood Storks are generally quiet away from nesting colonies. Much of their communication around the nest involves physical displays and bill clattering rather than elaborate calls.
Nesting and Life History
Wood Storks are colonial nesters.
They typically choose trees standing directly in water or trees on islands surrounded by water. Nesting sites may include cypress swamps, mangrove forests, flooded hardwoods, and similar wetland habitats.
That water serves an important purpose.
A watery moat beneath a nesting colony helps discourage terrestrial predators such as raccoons from reaching eggs and chicks. In some southern wetlands, alligators beneath nesting colonies may provide an additional layer of protection by discouraging mammalian predators.
Both members of the pair help construct a large platform nest from sticks and vegetation. These nests can reach roughly 3–5 feet across and may continue to be repaired throughout the breeding season.
Females lay between one and five creamy-white eggs, and Wood Storks normally raise a single brood each year. Young remain in the nest for roughly 50–55 days before reaching the later stages of development.
Raising young requires an enormous supply of food. A nesting pair and their offspring may consume more than 400 pounds of fish during a breeding season, making productive shallow wetlands essential to successful reproduction.

Conservation Status: A Remarkable Recovery
The Wood Stork has one of the more encouraging conservation stories among North American wetland birds.
By the time the U.S. breeding population was federally listed as endangered in 1984, numbers had fallen dramatically. The population had declined from roughly 20,000 nesting pairs to only about 4,000–5,000 pairs, largely following extensive wetland loss and hydrological changes in South Florida.
Recovery efforts focused heavily on protecting wetlands, restoring natural water patterns, protecting nesting colonies, and improving habitat throughout the Southeast.
The species responded.
Its breeding population increased, the number of nesting colonies expanded dramatically, and breeding birds spread northward into additional portions of the southeastern United States. By 2026, the U.S. breeding population was estimated at approximately 10,000–14,000 nesting pairs across roughly 100 colony sites.
The Southeast U.S. population was officially removed from the federal list of endangered and threatened wildlife on March 9, 2026. A 10-year monitoring program is now in place to track the population following delisting.
That does not mean Wood Storks no longer need wetlands.
Their survival and reproductive success remain closely linked to water levels, prey availability, nesting habitat, and healthy wetland ecosystems.
In Texas, the Wood Stork is still listed as a state-threatened species.
The distinction makes this species a wonderful example of what conservation success actually looks like. Recovery does not mean conservation stops. It means conservation worked well enough to reach the next stage.

Naturalist’s Note
There is something wonderfully contradictory about a Wood Stork.
Standing in the marsh, it can look awkward, ancient, and maybe even a little grumpy. Then those enormous wings open and the whole bird changes. A Wood Stork rising on a thermal is graceful enough to make you forget all about that bald head and oversized bill.
Here on the Texas Gulf Coast, seeing one also tells a larger story about wetlands. A shallow pond that looks half-dried and unimpressive to us may be exactly what a hungry stork needs. Falling water concentrates fish, creating temporary feeding grounds not only for Wood Storks but for herons, egrets, spoonbills, ibises, and countless other wetland species.
And now the Wood Stork carries another story with it.
This is a bird whose U.S. population declined severely enough to require federal protection, then recovered enough to be removed from that list more than 40 years later. That didn’t happen because wetlands stopped mattering. It happened because people finally recognized just how much they matter.
Sometimes conservation really does work.
Similar Species
Several large white waterbirds can cause confusion at a distance.
- American White Pelican – Also huge and black-and-white in flight, but considerably larger. Pelicans have an enormous pouched bill, much shorter legs, and usually fly with the neck pulled back rather than stretched straight ahead.
- Great Egret – Tall and white, but lacks the Wood Stork’s black flight feathers. Great Egrets also have a slender yellow bill and a completely feathered head and neck.
- White Ibis – Considerably smaller, with a reddish-orange curved bill and reddish legs. Adults retain white feathers over the head and neck rather than developing the Wood Stork’s dark bald head.
- Whooping Crane – Another huge white bird with black visible in the wings. Whooping Cranes have a straighter bill, different body shape, and a red crown rather than the Wood Stork’s dark, scaly head.
- Roseate Spoonbill – Similar in size and often shares the same wetlands, but the pink plumage and broad spoon-shaped bill quickly separate it from a Wood Stork.
