Few wild mammals are as familiar—or as unmistakably Texan—as the White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

They step quietly from wooded cover at dawn, disappear almost effortlessly into tall grass, and seem to materialize beside country roads just after sunset. How to Identify a White-Tailed Deer

White-tailed deer are medium-sized deer with long, slender legs, large ears, and a relatively narrow face.

Then the tail rises.

One leap carries the deer toward the brush, another turns a brown animal into little more than a flash of white, and seconds later it has vanished into vegetation that didn’t seem dense enough to hide anything.

The same animal changes with the seasons.

A buck carrying velvet-covered antlers in summer may look almost gentle. By winter, those antlers have hardened, his neck has thickened, and breeding hormones have turned him into an animal willing to challenge another buck head-on.

A tiny summer fawn seems just as remarkable. Its spotted coat is so effective that a youngster lying motionless beneath grass can disappear only a few feet away.

White-tailed deer don’t need rarity to make them worth watching.

Similar Species

There aren’t many animals likely to be confused with a White-tailed Deer on the Texas Gulf Coast, but several deer-like species occur elsewhere in Texas or occasionally turn up as exotics.

  • Mule Deer – Native to western Texas. Mule deer have extremely large ears and a mostly white tail ending in a black tip. Their antlers typically fork rather than growing from one main beam like those of a whitetail.
  • Axis Deer – A nonnative deer established in parts of Texas. Adults retain white spots throughout life and usually have a dark stripe running along the back.
