Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis)

Few birds capture the character of the coast quite like the Brown Pelican. These enormous seabirds cruise just above the waves, gather along fishing piers, and suddenly transform into spectacular aerial hunters when they plunge headfirst into the water after fish.

Today, seeing Brown Pelicans along the Texas Gulf Coast feels completely ordinary. That makes their history even more remarkable. Only a few decades ago, pesticide contamination pushed their populations dangerously low. After DDT was banned and nesting colonies received greater protection, Brown Pelicans staged an extraordinary recovery.

Description

The Brown Pelican is a massive coastal bird with an unmistakably oversized bill, expandable throat pouch, broad wings, and heavy body.

Despite the name, adults aren’t simply brown. Their bodies are mostly gray-brown, while mature birds develop a white head and neck with yellowish coloring around the crown. During breeding season, adults along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts develop a rich reddish-brown area along the back and sides of the neck.

Young Brown Pelicans look noticeably different. Juveniles have brown heads and necks with darker upperparts and a much paler belly. Their plumage gradually changes as they mature.

How to Identify a Brown Pelican

Size alone makes this bird difficult to overlook, but several features make identification especially easy.

Look for:

  • An extremely long bill with a large throat pouch
  • A heavy gray-brown body
  • Broad wings spanning roughly 6.5 feet (2 m)
  • A white or yellowish head in adults
  • A brown head and pale belly in juveniles
  • Long lines of birds flying low over the water
  • Spectacular headfirst dives while feeding

One of my favorite field marks isn’t a color or body feature at all. It’s the way they fly. Brown Pelicans often skim only a few feet above the water, rising and falling with the waves in long, loose formations.

Once you recognize that silhouette and flight pattern, you can identify them from an impressive distance.

Diet and Hunting

Brown Pelicans are primarily fish eaters. Along the Gulf Coast, their diet includes schooling species such as menhaden and mullet, along with other small fish concentrated near the surface.

Their hunting technique is spectacular.

A pelican circles above the water until it spots prey. Then it folds its wings and plunges headfirst toward the surface. Brown Pelicans may dive from heights approaching 65 feet (20 m).

That sounds like a terrible life strategy for a bird with such a long neck.

Fortunately, the pelican is built for it.

Air sacs beneath the skin help cushion the force of impact. During a dive, the bird also twists slightly to the left, which may help protect structures along the right side of its neck.

Once underwater, the expandable pouch beneath its bill traps fish and a considerable amount of seawater. The pelican surfaces, drains the water from its pouch, and then swallows its catch.

Despite the popular image of a pelican carrying fish around inside its pouch, the pouch isn’t a grocery bag. It’s primarily a fishing net.

Habitat and Range

Brown Pelicans are true coastal birds.

They occur along the Gulf, Atlantic, and Pacific coasts of the Americas, generally remaining close to saltwater or brackish coastal habitats. They frequent bays, estuaries, beaches, lagoons, barrier islands, jetties, docks, and offshore islands.

Along the Texas Gulf Coast, Brown Pelicans are a familiar sight throughout much of the year.

Offshore and inshore islands are especially important during nesting season. Colonies need relatively isolated areas where eggs and chicks are protected from terrestrial predators and excessive human disturbance.

Artificial islands created from dredged material can also provide valuable nesting habitat.

Behavior

For such awkward-looking birds on land, Brown Pelicans are remarkably graceful in the air.

They often travel in single-file lines or loose V formations. When conditions are right, they glide just above the water and use air currents rising from waves to help keep themselves aloft.

Their huge wings make this low-energy flight surprisingly efficient.

Brown Pelicans are also highly social. Groups gather at productive feeding areas, sandbars, jetties, docks, and nesting colonies.

And where pelicans gather, gulls aren’t usually far behind.

Gulls sometimes attempt to steal fish while a pelican is draining water from its pouch after a dive. Apparently even a six-foot wingspan doesn’t exempt you from being bullied over lunch.

Life History and Nesting

Brown Pelicans nest in colonies that may contain hundreds or even thousands of birds.

Along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, nesting sites are commonly located on isolated coastal islands. Nests may be built on the ground, in shrubs, or in trees depending on the available habitat.

The male typically collects nesting material while the female arranges it into the nest.

Females usually lay 2–4 chalky white eggs. Both parents participate in incubation, which lasts approximately 29–35 days. Unlike many birds that warm their eggs with a featherless brood patch on the belly, pelicans incubate their eggs using their feet.

That unusual habit would eventually become important in one of the darkest chapters of the species’ history.

From Endangered to Recovered: The Brown Pelican Success Story

It is difficult to imagine the Texas coast without Brown Pelicans.

But we came surprisingly close.

By the middle of the twentieth century, Brown Pelican populations were collapsing. Hunting and habitat loss had already taken a toll, but widespread pesticide use created an even more serious problem.

One of the major culprits was DDT.

DDT and its breakdown products accumulated through aquatic food webs. Small organisms were eaten by fish, and those fish were eaten by pelicans. As concentrations increased higher in the food chain, the pesticide interfered with normal eggshell formation.

The resulting shells were dangerously thin.

Because pelicans incubate their eggs with their feet, adults often accidentally crushed these fragile eggs before the chicks could hatch. Reproductive success plummeted. Other fish-eating birds, including Bald Eagles and Ospreys, suffered similar effects.

The decline in Texas was staggering.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, fewer than 100 Brown Pelicans remained along the Texas coast, compared with the thousands seen in earlier decades.

Brown Pelicans were federally listed as endangered in 1970.

Then came a turning point.

The DDT Ban

The United States banned most uses of DDT in 1972. At the same time, conservationists began protecting nesting colonies, restoring habitat, monitoring populations, and reducing other threats.

Slowly, pelicans began successfully producing young again.

The recovery became impossible to ignore.

Populations along portions of the Atlantic and eastern Gulf coasts recovered enough to be removed from federal protection in 1985. Other populations continued recovering over the following decades.

Finally, in 2009, the remaining Brown Pelican populations were removed from the federal endangered species list because they had recovered.

Texas provides an especially dramatic example. At their lowest point there were only a few dozen birds and a tiny number of breeding pairs along the coast. Today, thousands once again breed in the state.

The Brown Pelican’s return is more than an interesting chapter in wildlife history.

It is proof that conservation can work.

Removing a harmful chemical did not cause populations to recover overnight. The comeback required decades of habitat protection, monitoring, protected nesting colonies, and cooperation among conservation groups, government agencies, landowners, and communities.

But the birds came back.

Conservation Status Today

Brown Pelicans are no longer federally listed as endangered or threatened, but recovery does not mean they are free from danger.

Modern threats include:

  • Loss and erosion of nesting islands
  • Disturbance of breeding colonies
  • Oil spills
  • Entanglement in fishing line
  • Hooks and other discarded fishing gear
  • Coastal development
  • Severe storms and flooding

Nesting colonies are particularly vulnerable to disturbance. When people or boats approach too closely, frightened adults may leave their nests. Eggs and chicks can then be exposed to extreme heat, predators, or other hazards. Texas Parks and Wildlife continues to encourage boaters and anglers to give coastal rookery islands plenty of space during nesting season.

The lesson from the DDT era is not that the Brown Pelican has been “saved” forever. It is that continued conservation matters.

  • Brown Pelicans are one of only two pelican species known for routinely plunge-diving headfirst for fish. The other is the closely related Peruvian Pelican.
  • Their throat pouch can temporarily hold several gallons of water along with their catch.
  • Brown Pelicans often fly extremely close to the surface of the ocean to take advantage of air currents created by waves.
  • Both parents help incubate eggs and raise their chicks.
  • Pelican chicks are fed regurgitated fish by their parents.

A Naturalist’s Note

Brown Pelicans are so common along the Gulf Coast today that it is easy to take them for granted. They sit on pilings, glide past fishing boats, and cruise over the surf as though they have always been here in abundance.

But every one of those familiar silhouettes represents a conservation victory.

Within living memory, Brown Pelicans nearly disappeared from the Texas coast. Their return happened because scientists recognized a problem, evidence led to action, harmful pesticides were restricted, and people protected the places these birds needed to recover.

Now we get to watch lines of pelicans glide over the waves again.

There is something wonderfully hopeful about that.

The Brown Pelican reminds us that environmental damage can be severe, but it does not always have to be permanent. Sometimes, when we identify the problem and give wildlife a genuine chance to recover, nature responds.
